Where do I get the PDF from?

Two places, and they don’t hold the same amount of history.

On the website you’ll need to be on desktop. It doesn’t work in the mobile browser. Sign in, pick your account, and click “Statement options” over on the right, then Monthly PDFs. Tick whichever months you want and hit View PDF. Save it from there.

The app’s quicker. Tap the account, tap the three dots, and download.

Here’s the bit that catches people out. The app goes back further than the website. Halifax keeps roughly seven years online and at least ten in the app, so if you’re hunting for something from 2016 and the website says no, open the app before you give up and ring them.

Credit cards don’t work the same way at all. In the app you download them normally. On desktop there’s no button; you have to ask through Halifax’s chat and wait for it to come through.

And every file Halifax hands you is called preview.pdf. Every single one. Download nine months, and you’ve got nine identical filenames sitting in your downloads folder with no way of telling them apart. Rename each one as it arrives or you’ll be opening all nine to find the right one.

So why not just use what Halifax gives me?

If a lender asked for statements, do exactly that. Send the PDF and you’re finished. Nothing here helps you.

It falls apart when you want the numbers rather than the document. Halifax’s spreadsheet export doesn’t reach back very far, and past that point it’s PDF or nothing. An accountant cleaning up two years of a client’s books ends up with a folder full of them and most of a week gone. Same story for anyone pulling a full year together before a VAT return.

The date thing matters more than people expect

04/07/2025 is a statement from Halifax for July the Fourth.

Numerous converters were created based on American statements and read that as the seventh of April. They don’t tell you. A reconciliation doesn’t match, and they just reverse your whole year and you don’t even know it.

We read the day first—we know what UK statements look like. No splitting signed numbers by hand before importing as money in and out, two separate columns. The last row should be the same as the account, as balances carry through. If a long payment reference rolls to a second line, as it often does in Halifax’s format, we don’t leave a blank line there either – we simply reconnect the long reference to the transaction that it came from.

Take it as Excel, CSV or QuickBooks. The minute your file is converted, it will be deleted.
